Bridge over Bradford Creek - Maldon to Laanecoorie Line

These two shots are provided by Des Jowett, showing the burnt out remains of the bridge over Bradford Creek on the Maldon to Laanecoorie Line.

I am indebted to Des Jowett for the photos and background history of this line.

  1. Wow, that's like a work of art! Are the rails still in place on the majority of that line, Geoff?

    1. No Ivan, The line is now a heritage railway from Castlemaine to Maldon and terminates there. The rail on the section to Shelbourne was lifted many years ago. The heritage railway is the Victorian Goldfields Railway: http://www.vgr.com.au/homepage.php

  2. Oh yes of course, I know that line - a friend of mine lived just outside of Castlemaine and I remember the line being reconnected to the station a while back. That section with the track suspended in mid-air obviously isn't part of the tourist operation though (or is it? It might make an unusual train trip!)

  3. The line ran from Castelmain to Maldon, then ran back out of the Maldon yard in the reverse direction and on to the vicinity of Shelbourne. It was originally intended to go to Laanecoorie, but was stopped earlier. This bridge is on the section between Maldon and Shelbourne, which is not part of the tourist operation, and has been abandoned. Since this photo, the rails have all been removed.

    1. Definite public hazard there - not surprising. Thanks.
