Jeparit - Yanac Branch - Bridge over Wimmera River at Jeparit.

The bridge is still in existence over the Wimmera River, although the aerial view appears to show it without decking. It is to the west of the township of Jeparit, crossing the Wimmera River a short distance before the river empties into Lake Hindmarsh. I have this bridge marked for a visit to photograph it, having missed out on the opportunity when shooting the bridge at Quantong.

However I have some photos from Allan Renshaw showing an ARHS special pulled by J 508 crossing the bridge in September 1966.

  1. Thanks for those ARHS on tour photos - I believe that particular bridge on the old Yanac line was damaged by floods several times after closure, large debris destroyed some of the peers so it was partially demolished to allow debris to pass through next time. The nearby Yaapeet line was booked out of service because of flooding last time I passed though up there, not sure if it's been reopened now or left to deteriorate?

  2. Having not visited the bridge as yet, I can't say. But the google aerial images appear to show a bridge that is intact except for the deck. Of course I don't know how old those images are.

  3. If you do visit I'd strongly suggest the Wimmera Mallee Pioneer Museum Vintage Rally weekend, which is usually Queen's Birthday long weekend - they fire up lots of old agricultural machinery and the museum itself is well worth a look... once upon a time they used to fire up the steam tractors but I think they're just static exhibits now. Also the birthplace of Bob Menzies and there's somewhat of a shrine to him in the main street.

    1. Unfortunately I cannot plan my visits with such precision, but it is worth remembering, thank you.
